In-space transportation startup The Exploration Company has acquired German additive manufacturing firm Thrustworks to expand its production capacity and unlock new commercial revenue streams.
Founded in 2023, Thrustworks Additive Manufacturing produces high-performance metal components for space and defence applications. It offers end-to-end manufacturing capabilities, including design optimisation, printing, and post-processing. According to the company, it is among the first European suppliers to commercialise additive manufacturing and coating of high-performance thrust chambers made from niobium alloy C103, a lightweight material that is capable of withstanding extreme temperatures, making it ideally suited for propulsion systems.
On 17 November, The Exploration Company announced that it had expanded its footprint in Germany with the acquisition of Thrustworks. The company did not disclose the terms of the deal.
The Exploration Company is primarily focused on developing a modular cargo and crew capsule called Nyx. However, in a statement accompanying the acquisition announcement, CEO Hรฉlรจne Huby outlined how the purchase would enable the company to develop new revenue streams as it works toward Nyxโs planned 2028 debut.
โWith this merger, we integrate within TEC and scale at the service of the European industry a unique niobium printing capability and a great team,โ said Huby. โWe intend to serve our clients with applications ranging from satellite thrusters to thrusters for defense applications.โ
In addition to generating new revenue streams, The Exploration Company stated that the acquisition would expand its manufacturing capacity, with Thrustworks expected to scale its facilities in North Rhine-Westphalia and add new production capabilities. The company also noted that the deal would help strengthen its supply chain resilience.
