The Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) announced 10 May that it had opened up a new subsidiary in Italy. The new subsidiary which is called SSC Space Italy (Swedish Space Corporation Space Italy is an interesting way to go) and will allow the company to target the growing Italian space market.

According to company filings, the subsidiary was formed in February 2023 and has a registered address in Cascina which is west of Pisa. According to an SSC press release, the new subsidiary will operate under the company’s Engineering Services division. While it will offer the company’s current services to an Italian market, SSC has also stated that it will utilize SSC Space Italy as a platform to expand its current offerings and reach new markets.

“For the last decade, SSC has invested time and energy in strengthening our capacity globally,” explained SSC CEO Stefan Gardefjord. “With the establishment of SSC Space Italy, we emphasize our role as a key player in one of Europe’s leading space markets, and leader in the industry as a whole.”

The leadership of SSC Space Italy will be assumed by Davide Starnone who will take up the role of director general of the new subsidiary. Starnone most recently held the role of managing director of Aurora Technology BV, an SSC subsidiary based in the Netherlands. Aurora Technology primarily provisions engineers and scientists for on-site support and counts the European Space Agency as its primary client. Interestingly, according to Aurora Technology, Starnone will continue to serve as the company’s managing director “with an unchanged commitment and focus.” It sounds like a lot of work for one person.
