UK-based small satellite launch startup Orbex announced December 9 that it has begun construction of a state-of-the-art launch platform. The platform is expected to be used for testing and not launch attempts.
Orbex is in the process of developing its two-stage Prime launch vehicle, which is designed to be capable of carrying around 150 kilograms to low Earth orbit. The maiden flight of Prime is slated for 2022.
The design and construction of the new launch platform, which will be known as LP1, is being conducted by Scottish marine design and manufacturing firm Motive Offshore Group. Once complete, it will be installed at a dedicated test facility near Kinloss, a stone’s throw away from the company’s headquarters in Forres, Scotland.
According to Orbex, although the platform will be technically capable of supporting launch attempts, it will be used exclusively for ground-based testing. In addition to supporting the development of Prime, the platform will also host launch campaign preparation, including the testing of each vehicle’s propellant tanks, dress rehearsals of various prelaunch procedures, and multi-engine vertical hot fire testing.
The new launch platform is expected to enable Orbex to accelerate the debut of Prime from the vehicle’s actual launch facility in Sutherland. Construction of the Sutherland spaceport is due to begin early next year.
