Earth observation data provider and satellite manufacturer ICEYE has secured over PLN 40 million (€9.38 million) in new funding from Vinci S.A., an investment vehicle of Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego (BGK), Poland’s National Development Bank.
As an investment vehicle for BGK, Vinci S.A. is tasked with investing in the commercialization and expansion of Polish startups. According to the fund’s website, its goal is to “retain ownership of innovative technologies and patents in Poland.”
“By signing the agreement with ICEYE, through Vinci, Bank Gospodarstwa Krajowego is implementing its strategy for 2025-2030, which assumes support for innovative Polish technologies,” explained Mirosław Czekaj, President of BGK.
ICEYE is, however, not easily defined as a Polish company. Founded in Finland in 2014, the company only expanded into Poland in October 2017. Yet, in its 25 August press announcement, ICEYE described itself as a Polish–Finnish company. Notably, this statement appeared solely on the Polish-language version of its website, with no equivalent English-language release.
The company’s leadership has strong ties to Poland, with CEO and founder Rafał Modrzewski being of Polish descent and an alumnus of the Warsaw University of Technology. It has also signed contracts with the Ministry of National Defense to provide three radar satellites to the Polish Armed Forces. However, despite these connections, ICEYE POLSKA is just one of several subsidiaries, with others located in Greece, Spain, the United Arab Emirates, and the United States.
According to ICEYE, its Polish subsidiary is a “key pillar” of the company. Its offices in Warsaw host the Satellite Operations Centre, which supports the global constellation of synthetic aperture radar satellites. The site is also home to the satellite planning team and the research and development laboratory. ICEYE is currently expanding its facilities in the country, an initiative that the new funding will likely support.
